Business leaders Investment Forum in Samara
An exclusive two-day Business Leaders Investment Forum “Innovation for Business” was held at the Reional Center for Innovations and Transfer of Technologies, Samara, on January 27-28, 2010. The Forum program was created for local business & community leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators and Business Angel investors, who are seeking to improve the competitiveness and efficiency of their enterprises via the use of innovation and new technologies.
Marchmont Investment Forum is the first in the forum series 2010. The event organizers are investment and consulting company MARCHMONT Capital Partners, Nizhny Novgorod, and national media-partner UNOVA Media. The general partner of the Forum is the Russian Venture Company. The Forum’s official sponsor is Finance Group.
Among the co-organizers are Technopark in Samara, and the Regional Center for Innovations and Transfer of Technologies, in partnership with BIT contest and iCamp project.
The Forum partners are Samara regional office of an all-Russia NGO “Delovaya Rossiya”, Mediaholding Expert, Volga Media, Daily Business Media and Samara Region Innovation and Investment Fund.
The Forum’s day one “Applying Innovative Thinking to Improve Company Efficiency & Market Competitiveness” was openedwith greetings and introductory words on the regional economy conditions by Kendrick White, the founder and the general director of MARCHMONT Capital Partners, Nizhny Novgorod; Valentin Filatov, the director of the Regional Center for Innovations and Transfer of Technologies, Samara Region; Gennady Kiryushin, the Chairman of Samara regional branch of Delovaya Rossiya; Gerhard Markov, the vice-president on international relations and VIP-clients connections in Group Finance, Moscow.
Every year 200 new innovation projects start up in Samara region, requiring commercialization and fund raising.
“Those entrepreneurs, who survived the crisis, will develop easier. They realized that in order to survive the difficult times, they need to merge together”, Mr. Kiryushin said.
The opening session was followed by series of round tables and discussions.
The Session 1 “Preparing the Foundation for Russia’s 21st Century Innovation Economy” included, among others, speeches by Kendrick White on Russia’s competitive advantages in modern economics and Anatoly Zaikin from Rusnano on innovation infrastrucutre development in nano-industry. The Forum participants showed interest in the speech by Yevgeny Savin, the general director of UNOVA.RU project, who spoke about innovation eco-system, explained why start-ups don’t require much investment, how to make investment decisions at seed stage and show cased examples of real companies at various development stages.
According to the participants’ feedback, one of the best speakers was Eduard Fiyaksel, the Head of Venture Management and Marketing Departments in Nizhny Novgorod branch of the State University – Higher School of Economics and the President of the business-angels Association of the Volga Federal District “Start invest”, who spoke about regional innovation clusters.
The Forum’s special guest Patrick Fullick, Founder & President of Science:Connections, Moscow ~ London, presented a master class “From Laggard to Leader – how the UK transformed into an Innovation Economy”, and talked about British traditional entrepreneurship and ways to adapt the culture in order to comply with the 21st century, as well as shared success stories of some Russian-British innovation projects. Mr. Fullick also announced an exhibition on Yury Gagarin’s space flight anniversary, that will take place in London in 2011.
The second part of the day was filled with discussion on the role of innovations in Russian economy and the companies’ experience on practical implementation of innovation technologies. Specifically, Polina Novikova, the Head of Corporate Finance Department in Finance Group, St. Petersburg, talked about taxation in innovation industries and tax redemptions within special economic zones.
The last session of the first day was opened by Marina Shichkina, the Director of the Russian Association of Innovation Development (RAID), the Head of Innovation Management Subcommittee at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation (CCI RF), Moscow. Ms. Shichkina spoke about “last generation” technoparks in Russia, their advantages and development perspectives.
Among the speakers at the Forum’s day two “Attracting Investment Capital to Innovation Projects & Enterprise Modernization” were distinguished Russian experts, including: Oleg Elshin, executive director and partner at East Kommerts, Moscow; Kendrick White, the general director of MARCHMONT Capital Partners, Nizhny Novgorod; Mikhail Treyvish, Chairman of the Board of International Factors Group and the President of OmniGrade rating agency, Moscow ~ Vienna.
Case studies on development strategies of their companies were shared by Yuri Mikheev, general director, Russian Engineering Academy, Volga brunch, Samara; Elena Massolova, director on investment in Business Angels Fund AddVenture, Moscow; and other representatives from Samara companies.
The day two program ended with a round table, where the participants discussed Business Angels Clubs activities in Russia, USA and Great Britain, and agreed on the necessity to create a Business Angels Club in Samara region.
The event was closed with a networking reception.
The Forum was attended by 60 participants, including owners and top-managers of the companies from Samara city, Samara region, Moscow and other cities, Universities and science institutions representatives, experts from large international corporations, Business Angels, entrepreneurs, seeking investment into science and technology business.
