Russian Railways in "$60m" Olympics cargo move

Regional rail operator North-Caucasus Railways has started $60.4m construction of a cargo terminal between the Adler and Veseloye stations in Greater Sochi, sources in the company report.

The 26-hectare terminal is to be equipped with five overhead travelling cranes, dead end and passing tracks to increase maneuverability and unloading speed, warehouse facilities, and a driveway.

The bulk cargo transshipment capacities of the new terminal are expected to be 6.6 million tons of rubble and 4.38 million tons of sand per year.

Russian Railways' spokesperson clarified that the new terminal would serve the needs of construction in Sochi of prospective Olympics-2014 facilities.

North Caucasus Railways is a part of nationa rail operator Russian Railways.

Construction is for be completed at the end of 2009.
