Irkutsk scientists present 3D-model of road accidents

Young scientists in Irkutsk have developed a project of the three-dimension scheme of a road accident that helps to restore full image of the accident, the website of the Commission on Modernization and Technological Development of the Economy of Russia reports.
Students and teachers of the National Research Irkutsk State Technical University (NR IrSTU) reportedly make the 3D model of a road accident using a special laser device.
The smart device captures every millimeter at the collision place. The laser first scans the picture, and then photographs it. It functions well in the darkness as well. Dents, scratches, braking distance and everything else within focus, including, for example, pedestrians are captured on the one-to-one scale. The device is normally used to examine buildings, bridges and other engineering structures. Irkutsk scientists have suggested to expand its functions.
“Human eye can’t notice everything. Sometimes it is difficult to measure overall situation of the road accident, and some very important details can be left unnoticed. This technology enables to capture the overall picture. There will be no left out details,” Evgeny Belyayev, the senior professor of the NR IrSTU, said.
The road accident is scanned from two spots. It is not necessary to come close to the place of accident. The laser device sees damage from tens of meters, which is important at busy highways. Such assessment is not only accurate, but also true. Total procedure will take about ten minutes. As all drivers know, it takes much longer for road police officers to write up a protocol. After that the device data need to be uploaded into the computer program, and the 3D-model of the road accident is ready.
3D-modelling of road accidents has been used in Europe, but never in Russia. Young scientists from Irkutsk intend to offer their project to insurance companies and road police officers. The device will help them to objectively assess losses from accidents, and cope faster with traffic jams that are often caused by road accidents.
