Space tech to deal with waste

A new environment-friendly project aimed at using plasmatrons to incinerate solid household waste is on the table in Nizhny Novgorod, in the mid-Volga area. Plasmatrons have traditionally been used to develop space rocket engineering.

The project has been developed by scientists at Russia’s Keldysh Center, which is part of Roscosmos, the federal space agency. According to Center CEO Vladimir Koshlakov, plasmatrons “make it possible to generate high-temperature gases in a 4,000-5,000°C temperature range.”

What was originally meant to further space technology could now be used to not only eliminate heaps of solid household waste but also destroy highly hazardous industrial waste. As a separate upside, the system is expected to utilize incineration generated gases to rotate turbines and generate electrical energy.
