Wheelchair patients may expect jacket with conditioning

19 Apr '19
Word came earlier this year that engineers at the Don State Technical University (DSTU) in Rostov-on-Don, in Russias Southwest region, have developed clothes for the physically impaired that can only move around in a wheelchair.

This special smart membrane-based attire is expected to help a wheelchair-bound wearer keep a temperature of his comfort for two hours. To control a microclimate, he would use his smartphone. The wearer keeps warm by heating bendable carbon fiber plates placed near his legs. The new jacket is expected to cost about $185/apiece.

The smart clothing has been tested in a lab, and limited clinical trials have reportedly been successful. The developers have not disclosed, though, whether the jacket will hit the general consumer market or will be sold to special categories of customers.
