Seismic data processing device to help avoid accidents on oil fields

1 Jun '21
Scientists of the Institute of Oil and Gas Geology and Geophysics of the SB RAS have developed a prototype of a digital seismometer with the ability to process data online. The project was supported by the Innovation Promotion Foundation (regional office in the Technopark of the Novosibirsk Academgorodok) under the UMNIK program.

The author of the project, Arkady Drobchik, is a specialist in the field of obtaining and processing field and laboratory geophysical data at the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics of the SB RAS. Together with a team of scientists, he developed a pre-processed seismic recorder that collects information on seismic activity and generates regular reports on the state of the environment. This makes it possible to study the processes of the occurrence of technogenic seismicity, leading to destruction, accidents, economic damage and loss of life.
Our sensors are primarily aimed at recording seismicity, which occurs when the elastically deformed state of the medium changes. These changes can be caused, for example, by the filling of reservoirs, the development of quarries, the extraction of minerals, the construction of tunnels, the flooding of mines. In most cases, seismicity manifests itself in the form of micro-earthquakes and does not pose a threat to either the object itself or the surrounding areas. However, in the case of a negative scenario of the development of events, it can manifest itself in the form of larger earthquakes, which, in turn, can cause great damage, noted Arkady Drobchik.
To register seismic vibrations the environment uses seismic networks with sensors that are installed in wells. Having instant access to information on seismicity, it is possible to provide timely assessments and recommendations on the process of field development, operation of large-scale facilities, which will allow avoiding economic damage in the event of accidents.

With the support of the Fund for the Promotion of Innovations under the UMNIK program, three working prototypes have been developed and assembled to date. Despite the existing competitors, scientists are positioning sensors as a fundamentally new solution due to internal data processing algorithms and the relatively low cost of deploying a network of registration points.
There are companies in Russia that develop seismic recorders, including those with the ability to transfer data via WI-FI or GSM. The network operation of these recorders is based on continuous data transmission, requiring a constant connection to a broadband Internet or wireless network. Our solution allows us to extract only useful signals from continuous recording, which significantly reduces the amount of transmitted data. This allows you to create a network based on low bandwidth GSM networks.

Observing seismicity is the first step towards building digital geomechanical models of the geological environment and better managing large objects. Based on the models, it is possible to give recommendations and predictive estimates for the operation of fields or large-scale construction, added Arkady Drobchik.
Now the team is planning to create a hardware and software complex for seismic monitoring, consisting of from several registrars and data collection server with alert function, and go to sales. For these purposes, the team again took part in the competition of the Fund for the Promotion of Innovations and received 2 million rubles under the Start-1 program.
