Siberian robotic guard to see blind spots in large territory

28 Nov '16
A prototype robotic guard that can keep watch and act as a sentinel for a large territory has been developed at the Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radio Electronics (TUSUR).

The guard is a mobile robot with a video camera which has been taught to move around a territory to watch over and transmit video data to a remote screen. A user can pre-program the robots movement route or control its path remotely. The robot cannot apprehend a perpetrator; however, one of its clear advantages is the ability to see blind spots typically inaccessible by video surveillance systems.

To increase video surveillance coverage a user has to increase the number of devices; but one cant add elements indefinitely. Also, adding cameras to a system adds substantially to its overall cost as each camera requires a dedicated channel, communication line and display, TUSUR said.

The developers believe such robots could help much in guarding electric power stations, oil refineries, airports, train stations, concert halls, stadiums, museums, etc.
