Irkutsk scientists to create unique nuclear waste separator

2 Mar '12
Scientists from the National Research Irkutsk State Technical University (NR IrSTU) intend to create a spent nuclear fuel separation unit, STRF.ru reports.

The $565,000 project is carried out under a state contract with the RF Ministry of Education and Science in 2012-2014.

The new machine will combine in a single cycle separation of three groups of ions with different energy.

The scientists are currently creating a model of plasma optical mass separator that works on plasma of three gases compound. The prototype model includes vacuum system, plasma accelerator, two systems for creating electromagnet field, receivers of separated ions, and diagnostics complex. Scientists of the NR IrSTU are also working on two new energy mass-analyzers for analyzing weight composition. So far they have come up with theory and calculations, and are looking for a design solution.

Under 2012 plans, the scientists will create a corpuscular diagnostics complex. Nikolay Strokin, head of the project, professor of the department of radio-electronics and telecommunication systems of the NR IrSTU, estimates cost of creating a full model of plasma optical mass-separator at $1.7m. Mr. Strokin notes that the prototype model will be the first unit for separating substances with complex composition in the world.
