Optical devices may improve with new St. Pete composites

Researchers at ITMO University in St. Petersburg this past summer improved targeted treatment technology for nanoporous glass based composites with silver and copper added.

Now the team is looking forward to getting a plasmonic structure with highly (and accurately) predictable optical properties.

All composite materials have the high potential to be used in optical instruments such as lasers, lidars, sensors, lenses, waveguides and other applications where a light signal must be processed. The scientists pin much hope on glass with metal nanoparticles added as part of next gen optical filters.

Depending on what metal ions are added to the glass, a resultant composite could control a very specific part of the spectrum, as required.
