17 Dec '14
The State University of Dagestan in RussiaТs Northern Caucasus and RomeТs La Sapienza University are boosting collaboration in a range of research areas; the decision was made during a Dagestani delegationТs most recent visit to Italy, the Dagestani university announced.
The collaboration began in 2009, driven by Jalaludin Saidbegov, a La Sapienza professor and ethnic Dagestani. A strategic partnership agreement was then signed.
During the latest visit, the partners agreed to keep up interaction in the field of studying and developing new nanomaterials. A researcher from the Dagestani universityТs nanotech laboratory will spend some time in Rome working with his Italian colleagues.
In addition, an agreement was reached on scientific collaboration in the monitoring of aquatic ecosystems and in the protection of fish reserves. The partners considered possibilities for the joint participation of Dagestani and Italian biologists in major European Union projects in this field.
The State University of Dagestan is one of the largest in RussiaТs Northern Caucasus. Its history dates back to the early 1930s when the region was still a far-flung and underdeveloped agricultural province of Russia. The university is now alma mater for more than 20,000 students from across the region.
Set up as far back as 1303, La Sapienza is one of EuropeТs oldest and largest universities with a current student body of more than 150,000 people.
