Scientists at the Moscow-based National Research University of Electronic Technology (MIET) have developed and tested a new device to function as an artificial kidney. It is portable and enables the patient to move around freely enough, Hi-news.ru reported.
If/when the innovation hits the broad market, it may have the potential to “unseat” hemodialysis from its dominant position on the list of Russian doctors’ preferences. Hemodialysis is a method of treating blood outside of the body of a kidney patient in specialized centers, which makes the person bedridden for a long time.
The novel system is reported to require no more than two replacements of blood-cleansing solution per day—a competitive edge over the standard peritoneal dialysis, another blood treatment procedure that brings special solution into the patient’s abdomen and requires its multiple replacements.
The device has been successfully tested in vitro and in vivo, the source said.
The project will be further promoted next month at the Vuzpromekspo-2017 exhibition in Moscow; the developers promise to highlight new features.
It’s not the first artificial organ MIET has come up with. A university team earlier developed an artificial heart for patients with acute forms of heart failure.
