RTCOMM, FGUP NIIR, and Gilat to launch satellite Internet access
22 Nov '11
The system of satellite Internet access will be set up in Russian, reports.
Russian telecommunication company RTCOMM, science and research institute of radio FGUP NIIR, and international group Gilat Satellite Networks have signed a trilateral agreement, implying that Gilat transfers technologies of equipment of Ka-band satellite communication, as well as creation of the joint science and research center in Russia.
Besides, RTCOMM and Gilat signed a bilateral agreement on supplying the first batch of equipment that will be used in the project before production is launched in Russia.
Under the project “Provision of high-speed access to information networks via satellite communication systems”, the parties will launch production of base land stations, as well as Ka-band terminals, in Russia. The plant’s projected annual capacity will top 1 million stations and terminals.
Launching production in Russia will result in much lower cost of equipment if compared with existing systems and make satellite communication available and mass-accessible.
Placing group of Ka-band high-density payload satellites, including RTCOMM’s satellites, in orbit, is scheduled for 2012-2014. Under the project, Internet access will be provided to 2 million users at affordable prices. Socially vulnerable groups of population will get services at special tariffs, in order to eliminate digital divide between large cities and territories with undeveloped infrastructure of landline communication networks.
