Ural scientists extract rare earths from uranium ore

15 Sep '14
Scientists at Ural Federal University in Ekaterniburg are pushing their project aimed at finding new techniques for the extraction of rare earth metals from uranium ore, the UrFU press service announced. Researchers from UrFU’s Institute of Physics and Technology are expecting an $8m federal government grant to continue their work.

If they pull it off, the effort may help call off imports which at least six major economic sectors are currently dependent on, including radio electronics, the instrumentation industry, nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, the chemical industry, and metallurgy.

The first $2.7m grant tranche is expected to come later this year, UrFU said.
