Mechel restarts Tikhvin Ferroalloys furnace

2 Jun '09
Metal and mining holding Mechel has re-launched electric furnace #2 after repair at its subsidiary in Leningrad Region, Tikhvin Ferroalloys, Mechel announced today.

At the moment, Tikhvin Ferroalloys reportedly runs three electric furnaces, with one kept in standby mode.

According to the report, Tikhvin Ferroalloys curbed production in October 2008 as market demand was low and chrome ore imports got prohibitive. However, in January 2009 the factory secured unremitting ore supplies from Mechels Kazakhstan asset and in April international high-carbon ferrochrome markets picked up, which allowed Mechel to boost production at Tikhvin Ferroalloys.
