Elon Musk considers exploring Russia for EV expansion
22 Mar '17
Tesla Inc., a U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker and energy company, is reportedly in active process of seeking real estate in Moscow and St. Petersburg for upcoming showrooms and Tesla service centers geared towards the Russian market, Teslarati.com reported.
News of Tesla’s expansion into Russia comes after the head of Moscow Tesla Club Aleksey Eremchuk revealed to local media that the company had already solidified plans to enter the new market and was awaiting certification of its electric vehicles by the Russian government.
Elon Musk’s company believes there is ample room for Tesla growth in Russia—despite the currently minuscule size of the Russian electric car market (reportedly below 800 cars, of which about a third are in Moscow) and the lack of charging stations, the key snags Tesla would have to address in order to make any real impact in Russia.
