Cutting cost of high-octane gasoline production

A young Russian company called NGT Synthesis, which is a resident of the Skolkovo Technopark just outside Moscow, has come up with a proprietary methaforming process that reportedly enables a one-step conversion of methanol-containing hydrocarbons into gasoline.

The technology is said to make it possible to produce gasoline from naphtha and methanol at 30% of the standard production cost. In the process, no precious metals are used in their catalyst. High yield of high-octane gasoline blendstock is achieved at the cost of hydrotreater operation—and resembles the hydrotreater process flow except that methanol is used in lieu of hydrogen and no recycle compressor is needed. In this technology, most benzene is converted to toluene, and half of methanol becomes water.

The developers claim methaforming is simpler and cheaper than reforming, and brings advantages over the combined process (desulfurizer + isomerization + reforming).
